Basketball Lady
This project took a long time to finish for (hmm…) a combination of reasons but glad to share the process here now that it’s finally done :) <3

Software: Cinema 4D, Redshift, Photoshop, Ae
Year: 2022
There was a time when I was obsessed with women in sports in ad campaigns all across the main sports brands. All of those inputs made me sketch out this basketball lady, which is like a subconscious poop out magic✨
The initial approach was to have everything done in 3d but since my 3d knowledge had been pretty editorial, far from realism, and still lacked in technical aspects, it was quite challenging for me to get started.
Alas, I started with modeling buildings and basketball. I wanted to go for a somewhat cinematic feel so these early explorations are in 16x9!

In terms of color, I had a mood board of these 3 photos, which were amazing ref for composition and overall vibes. Def wanted to go for a combination of bright, saturated colors to match energetic and happy energy.

WIP WIP WIP SNAPSHOTS

Background evolves slowly…
Above are different stages of 3D background slowly coming together. Decided to go for 4x5 halfway through since the character will be more of the main focus in that ratio. Also, I tried to be intentional with the background elements creating a visual pattern of direction aiming towards the center of the layout, where the character will be standing.
Styleframes… Finally, ha :”””)
Character design went through quite some bouncing back and forth. The initial sketch had the character looking too young so I wanted to make it more mature looking and better proportions. This is the character design I ended up with!
Veeeeeeeeeery subtle differences in colors in those three. The last one was too fuzzy and blurry because of Bloom(thought it would make it cozy but it didn’t :”)). The first was having more contrast on the character from the bg but it seemed somewhat separated out so I went with the second one!

MOTION WIPS

aNimAtiNgggggg!
2D roughs were done in Psd for head turns but added having the ball going up and down in Ae! The 3d ball was animated in C4D and had those out as png seq separately to be comped in Ae for the final render!
